Congratulations on 231 years of independence and freedom from the abuse of executive power, class privilege, religious and cultural hegemony, oppressive central government, excessive taxation to fund colonial wars,... oh, wait... Sorry. I'm confused. What are you celebrating again?

by means of ever more effective methods of mind-manipulation, the democracies will change their nature; the quaint old forms — elections, parliaments, Supreme Courts and all the rest — will remain. The underlying substance will be a new kind of non-violent totalitarianism. All the traditional names, all the hallowed slogans will remain exactly what they were in the good old days. Democracy and freedom will be the theme of every broadcast and editorial

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

America was founded by patriots who risked their lives to bring freedom to our Nation. Today, our citizens are grateful for our Founding Fathers and confident in the principles that lead us forward. On Loyalty Day, we celebrate the blessings of freedom and remember our responsibility to continue our legacy of liberty.

Our Nation has never been united simply by blood, birth, or soil, but instead has always been united by the ideals that move us beyond our background and teach us what it means to be Americans. We believe deeply in freedom and self-government, values embodied in our cherished documents and defended by our troops over the course of generations. Our citizens hold the truths of our founding close to their hearts and demonstrate their loyalty in countless ways. We are inspired by the patriotic service of the men and women who wear our Nation's uniform with honor and decency. The military spouses and families who stand by their loved ones represent the best of the American spirit, and we are profoundly grateful for their sacrifice. Our country is strengthened by the millions of volunteers who show deep compassion toward their neighbors in need. All citizens can express their loyalty to the United States by flying the flag, participating in our democracy, and learning more about our country's grand story of courage and simple dream of dignity.

The Congress, by Public Law 85-529, as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." This Loyalty Day, and throughout the year, I ask all Americans to join me in reaffirming our allegiance to our Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2007, as Loyalty Day. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in this national observance and to display the flag of the United States on Loyalty Day as a symbol of pride in our Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.

GEORGE W. BUSH

So there it is, not including suicides and murders. In America, you are more likely to get shot by the police than die by terrorism, and neither one comes even close to catching the flu — let alone getting in a workplace or car accident. I suggest snotty nosed kids, private vehicles, and work be banned immediately for everyone's safety.

More seriously, remember the Reichstag and what blind nationalism results in.

Finding New Ways to Be an Idiot
[22nd Nov, 2005|20:24]
[Tags|, , , ]

This was the cover of today's National Post.

Now bear in mind that the Mongols are to Islam as Nazis are to Judaism. The Mongols wiped-out whole cities in Persia and Iraq, killing millions. In 1298 the invading Mongols slaughtered an estimated 800,000 people in Baghdad and killed the Caliph (more or less Islam's equivalent to the Pope) and all his family and heirs. The event is at the hub of much of the last 700 years of history in the area and the ramifications of it continue today. Saddam Hussein frequently made referrence to the Mongol invasions in his speeches against the United States. As an occupying force in Baghdad right now Bush is not making it easier for his troops by posing for a picture like this. Even the Crusaders are less reviled in the Muslim world than the Mongols. I can't even think of a more historically myopic and just plain blatantly stupid photo opportunity for the man. He wouldn't be any more in-your-face if he were to paste horns on his head, paint himself red and parade around Baghdad holding a sign saying "Great Satan"... Only in this case he's not the one that is going to have rocket-propelled grenades launched at him. Way to go Peace Duke.

News of the Weird and Interesting
[3rd Dec, 2004|22:37]
[Tags|, , , , ]

By now you have probably seen the Bush Arrested for War Crimes hoax page. The world-cnn.com page is registered to one "Phineas Liu" of New York - who doesn't exist. The fictional Dr. Phineas Liu has a weblog as part of the "RYU Hospital: Dwayne Medical Center" website. The Dwayne Medical Center, "synonymous with the world's most innovative and extraordinary healthcare," features "All the Miracles of Modern Medicine™" including genetically customized babies, male pregnancy, and a mouse as smart as  human (Mr. Frisby? Brain?), and is actually a work of "web art" belonging to Virgil Wong.

Now, even more interesting after all those layers of deception, is the fact that the fake CNN site is, in fact based on truth. Lawyers Against the War, based right here in Vancouver, actually filed torture charges against George W. Bush under Canadian Criminal Code exactly as mentioned Virgil Wong's art in B.C. Provincial Court on the 30th of November. The charges were accepted by a Justice of the Peace and the court date will be set on Monday the 6th for a hearing to determine if a warrant of summons will be issued. The Attorney General of Canada has to determine if the proceedings will continue and the question of whether Bush's diplomatic immunity will apply has to be determined. This is real and you can read the press releases and the detail of the case via the link above.

And now back to Virgil Wong... I did a great deal of digging and checking of references from his artist's résumé before becoming convinced that he is a real person. Kind of a weird way to spend the evening, but it got my mind completely off work, which is a good thing.

"Stay the Course" no one likes a "Flip-Flopper"

The psychology of the masses as whole is not susceptible to anything hesitant or weak... their feelings are not swayed so much by abstract reason as by a longing after strength... and thus would sooner be dominated than supplicated. The masses, in fact, feel themselves to have been abandoned by a weak government and prefer one which brooks no rival to one which gives them a liberal choice.

It's starting
[6th Nov, 2004|10:25]
[Tags|, ]

When you steal an election (more), people notice and things like this (80 KB PDF of a post someone in SF made earlier today, usernames removed) start to happen.

"So they put on an election; they have a bunch of hoopla in order to legitimize the ascendancy of who they've already selected to run the country anyway. They spend millions of dollars. They admitted in congressional hearings to spending 10 million dollars to influence the election in Chile.... So why would they only do that in Chile and make sure their outcome was right in Chile and not do it here? Why would you think that they would only do it in another country and not here? When this is the country that really counts"

Numbers
[6th Oct, 2004|18:39]
[Tags|, , ]

I was just looking at census numbers for New York City and the count estimates for the march against the Republicans during their convention. The number of people on the street in protest amounted to roughly the same as every single 20 to 60 year old on the island of Manhattan. In terms of the whole city, roughly one in ten adults came out. This is the city that was actually attacked coming out against Bush and the Republicans. The city that saw its tallest towers crumble and fall sees this president as more dangerous to them than those he claims to be defending them from. Think about it.

And if you are American, think about it very hard before you vote next month.
