Rigged for Stereo
[10th Aug, 2007|13:50]

The second, matching lens I was waiting for arrived today. Using my flash bracket for a mount, I rigged the two identical cameras up in tandem for a test shot. They both trigger with the remote quite nicely, although, as I expected, the synch is nowhere near perfect. I could hear the shutters closing about a quarter second apart. That's not good enough for anything in motion - that's where the Stereo Realist will continue to be useful - but plenty good enough for this sort of thing and anything else where there isn't too much motion. Note that in the test Tharsis is sitting next to me. I've never managed to get a clear shot of a cat using the slide technique (taking two pictures with the same camera), so this is a definite improvement over that. |

The GIF version of the first of thee animations I will be doing from the stereoscopic pictures I made at this shoot. I tried something different (and expensive) with these and it turned out to be a disappointment. | ( Why it was disappointing. ) |

Today I received an e-mail from a post-graduate (MFA) student at the University of Alexandria, Egypt. He's doing his master's on "The 3-D Illusion Effect in Printmaking". This is one of those cases where the Internet is such a wonderful thing - thanks to the web my artwork is getting scholarly attention in Egypt. |

Pushing the 3-D ASCII Art Thing
[16th Nov, 2006|21:30]

Tristan Risk in 3D as ASCII art. <-- Now in colour! As before no animated GIFs were harmed in the making of this image, it's all plain text animated with CSS and JavaScript (that can't show on LJ directly). Once again, you'll have to follow the link to see this exercise in even more astounding uselessness than last time. Rendering this should pretty much max out your CPU - this is about as far as I can go with this in this direction. |

Something Different: 3-D ASCII Art
[13th Nov, 2006|17:48]

This is so completely pointless I'm at a loss to explain what possessed me to do it, nonetheless, I bring you: Tristan Risk in 3D as ASCII art. Note that this is not an animated GIF, this is plain text animated with CSS and JavaScript so I can't show it on LJ directly. You'll have to follow the link to see this exercise in astounding uselessness. It works best if you sit back and squint a little. |

My first all original "vintage" stereographic animation. The photograph was made during the shoot for Art of Adornment last July. I made several other stereoscopic images during that shoot which I have only just developed today (film!). So, more to come. BTW, the "scratch" on one of the frames was not photoshopped in - it's a cat hair that introduced itself while scanning the negatives, courtesy tharsis. It adds to the vintage feel, so I left it. | |

This is a different process than most of my vintage stereoscopes. Instead of being created from discrete left and right images this is created from a red-blue view that was posted in vintagephoto. It's an easy matter to separate out the colour channels, but getting a decent animation from them requires a bit more finesse. For one, the plane of vision used in the red-blue image did not lend itself well to animation. Secondly, presenting red-blue stereoscopic images as JPEGs suffers from the fact the JPEG compression badly blurs reds, so that the separated red channel ends up being a much lower quality image than the image than can be pulled from the blue channel. |

New Project - Sanctuary 3D
[3rd Jul, 2006|23:14]
|
Last night at Sanctuary I brought along the stereo camera and made a roll's worth of new 3D images. Animating these things takes time so you'll be seeing the images over the course of the next month or so. I've set up a special gallery area on my website for the images and put the first image in. Click the preview below to see the full-sized, full colour flash version of the 3D animation: ![[thumbnail]](http://www.mbarrick.net/livejournal/2006/07/sc3d01-preview.gif)
