This is a different process than most of my vintage stereoscopes. Instead of being created from discrete left and right images this is created from a red-blue view that was posted in vintagephoto. It's an easy matter to separate out the colour channels, but getting a decent animation from them requires a bit more finesse. For one, the plane of vision used in the red-blue image did not lend itself well to animation. Secondly, presenting red-blue stereoscopic images as JPEGs suffers from the fact the JPEG compression badly blurs reds, so that the separated red channel ends up being a much lower quality image than the image than can be pulled from the blue channel. |

PNE 1958
[7th Aug, 2006|15:54]
|

My dad talking to Miss PNE 1958. |
For you non-Vancouverites, PNE stands for "Pacific National Exhibition" which began as the Vancouver area's fall harvest fair and evolved into a major agricultural and industrial trade show, and the typical fall-fair carnival rides and sideshow developed into a permanent amusement park called "Playland" that opens in the spring, months before the actual PNE. The PNE grounds were the home of Vancouver's first stadium, Empire Stadium, where Roger Bannister ran the " Miracle Mile" in the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Empire Stadium fell into disuse after BC Place was opened in 1983, and was demolished not much later. The statue of Roger Bannister and John Landy that used to be at the entrance of the stadium has been moved to the main entrance to the PNE grounds. We used to get free tickets to the PNE at the end of the school year. It's funny, I used to go the PNE and Playland more when I lived on Vancouver Island than since I've actually lived in Vancouver. In the 16 years I've lived here, I've been once. |

Not What I Was Looking For
[6th Aug, 2006|20:24]
|
I was just digging through my box of old photographs, looking for something in particular, and much to my surprise, I found Waldo!
Actually is name is Erie Winram and the photograph was made by my father at the Vancouver Island Swim Club Championships in Nanaimo, BC, February 1977. |
I'd forgotten about the wealth of strange and wonderful things in that box. Trust me, I'll be posting more. |

The Summer of 1975

The Duncan Aquanis Swim Team float. The trailer is by "Al Higgins Wrought Iron". Hank Barrick made the swimmer-and-whale, a variation of which is still the logo for the aquatic centre in Duncan. Photo by Hank Barrick. Scanned from a very old, very faded negative by me just now because I have the urge to do something creative, but a dearth of energy and creativity. I still have and use the camera this was made with. |

Stereo #20
[28th Feb, 2006|22:13]
|

Stereo #20. No date on the original, but from the "Gibson Girl" hair and backdrop I'm guessing it's Edwardian. I love the backdrop and the fact that the edge of it is showing.
I didn't make it out Sunday with my "new" stereo camera. I'm hoping to give it a trial run this week. |
